Patio Design
The word patio takes on a variety of meanings. As a general term I would submit that it means an outdoor seating area.
Patios like other components of an outdoor living environment are available in a variety of styes from a flat concrete pad to multi-level stone veneered seating areas. When planning a patio these are the questions I ask.
How do you live? This is a fundamental question as it relates to how the area should be designed. Do you want an area to sit and converse with your friends, do you want the space for a ping pong table or an outdoor pool table, etc.. The truth is that life styles change over time and a space should be versatile to adapt to those changes. Large estates don’t face this challenge as often but it is still a major consideration.
What is the architectural theme of the property that you would like to achieve? Design should endeavor to carry out an architectural theme. The new elements should look like they were part of the original design of the property and not an add on.
Is the area going to be covered? There are a variety of covers for patio areas. Roof lines can be extended from the house, the cover can be freestanding, the cover can be made of wood, aluminum and or masonry. Depending upon the style and function virtually any configuration can be created.
Do you see yourself using media outside? Do you like soft music when you are visiting with your friends or catching up with your spouse. Do you see yourself watching the Super Bowl out on your patio. If so, then electrical supply, cable connections and speaker wire will need to be included in the plan.
